Steve Anthony: Principal

From 1977 to 1995, Steve was employed by the House of Representatives. From 1981 Steve served as the chief aide for Speaker Thomas Murphy, the longest serving Speaker in the United States. In 1995, he was selected Executive Director of the Georgia Democratic Party by Governor Zell Miller.

During his service at the State Capitol, Steve was a key player with many of the major pieces of legislation. He provided counsel and advice to hundreds of legislators. Steve was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the House staff as well as overseeing the training of new members. He developed a close relationship with most of the key leaders in the Georgia business community. Some of the more important items Steve was involved with were the rewriting of the state constitution in 1982, development of the redesign of the funding of the education system in Georgia (QBE), support and funding for the Georgia Dome, as well as the legislative implementation of the Georgia Lottery. In addition, Steve worked closely with Billy Payne in the early going to secure state support and funding for the 1996 Olympics.

As Executive Director of the Georgia Democratic Party, Steve was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the state party. More importantly, his task was to develop and implement the strategic plan that would keep the Governorship, other statewide offices and the General Assembly in democratic hands - as they had been for the entire century. This involved organizing, message development, research, press and media relations, communication and implementation. Polling, focus group work and get-out-the-vote were integral in this success. As a result, landmark victories occurred in 1998 in numbers greater than had been previously seen in that decade. His contacts in the political arena extend from Washington DC to local governmental officials throughout Georgia.

In 1999, Steve joined the public affairs firm of Dowling, Langley and Associates. Later that year he formed his own company, Anthony Consulting Group. Also, in 1999, Steve started teaching an upper-division Political Science course at Georgia State University in Atlanta.Titled Georgia Politics (POLS 4125), this course is an advanced, in depth study of Georgia politics and the Georgia political system. He also teaches American Government.

Steve is a native Georgian who received his undergraduate degree from West Georgia College, where he was a member of the track team and was President of the Letterman's Club his senior year. He then received his law degree from John Marshall Law School in 1977 before going to work at the State Capitol. He is the author of numerous articles about the legislative process and legislation. In 1998, he wrote a weekly newspaper column for selected papers around the state. In addition, he has been a periodic contributor for Business-to-Business magazine. Steve is a member of the GA State Games Commission which oversees the GA State Games held each year."
